One-day tour to Taraz
One-day tour to Taraz
Before the start of your tour, you will meet your guide at the Taraz railway station and set off on a journey through one of the oldest cities in Kazakhstan, founded in the 6th century. The city has remained an important center of non-ferrous metallurgy for centuries. Local craftsmen were distinguished by their high artistic performance of forging and casting.
Your first stop will be the Aisha-Bibi Mausoleum. It was built in the 12th century, during the heyday of the Karakhanid era. Terracotta tiles are used in the design – this is what makes the mausoleum unique and the only one of its kind in Kazakhstan.
Near the tomb of Aisha-Bibi is the mausoleum of Babaji-Khatun. Their eastern facades are on the same line. The structure is quite unique: There are no similar domes in Central Asia. The interior decoration of the mausoleum is also unique.
Your next stop is the thousand-year-old Karakhan Mausoleum, which was erected over the grave of one of the rulers of the Karakhanid dynasty. There is a version that in the Turkic world, it was the Karakhanids who were the first to convert to Islam, converting their subjects to the new faith.
Next comes one of the city’s main attractions – the Ancient Taraz archaeological complex. The archaeological monuments that are part of the museum-reserve are a constellation of ancient objects, amazing and unique in their uniqueness, beauty and history. Here you can explore the park itself, visit the Ancient Taraz Museum and the Ethnography Museum, as well as the Ethnocultural Center. Here you will also climb the observation tower to explore the ancient city.
Afterwards, you will visit the Zhambyl Regional Museum of History and Local Lore, where you will learn more about the history and heritage of the city of Taraz. Next to the park is the Kali-Yunus Eastern Baths complex. This building represents the household architecture of two centuries ago. The bathhouse consists of 11 interior rooms, ten of which have reached descendants in their original form.
Next, your route will follow the ruins of the ancient settlement of Akyrtas. “Akyrtas” is called mysterious and enigmatic. Archaeologists and scientists are still puzzling over what the ruins of the ancient structure actually were. Some claim that “Akyrtas” is an ancient Buddhist temple. Others are inclined to think that these are the remains of a Nestorian monastery. There is also a hypothesis that this is an Arab palace. The next stop will be the ethno-historical complex “Tekturmas” and the mausoleum “Tekturmas”. The mausoleum “Tekturmas” is one of the most recognizable landmarks of Taraz. It was erected over the grave of Sultan Mahmud Khan, the commander-in-chief of the troops of Karakhan. Tekturmas is also known for its underground passages, which, according to legend, are associated with the ancient shakhristan of Taraz. Approximately 800 m from the Tekturmas mausoleum is the ethno-historical complex “Tekturmas”. This complex will tell residents and guests about the history of the Great Silk Road, the Kazakh Khanate, historical battles, important events during the years of independence. Here you can also visit the observation deck to view the landscapes.
After that, together with the guide, you will return to the city of Taraz.
