3-day Tour to Turkestan
Day 1: Karagiye Depression (upper observation point) – Tuesu Sands (dune) – Bozjyra (3 upper panoramas) – Bozjyra (lower panorama)
Karagiye Depression (upper observation point) – Tuesu Sands (dune) – Bozjyra (3 upper panoramas) – Bozjyra (lower panorama)
After meeting your guide in the hotel lobby, you will set off on a journey through the deepest depression in Kazakhstan, springs, tunnels and other natural beauties of the Mangystau region. The first stop is the Karagiye (Karakiya) depression, 132 meters deep, which is the largest dry depression in the Republic of Kazakhstan and also ranks 5th in the world. This natural landmark is a deep bowl, bordered by steep, precipitous slopes and stretching 85 km in length and 25 km in width. The valley of the depression is dotted with ravines, gullies, hollows, gorges, and snow-white mountains rise around it. The bottom of the basin is covered with salt marshes. In the center of the basin there are many picturesque remnants that form the Valley of Figures. The depression continues to grow and change, deepening and acquiring new contours. Karagiye is not only a popular tourist attraction in Kazakhstan, but also a protected natural area. The territory of the depression is part of the Karagiye-Karakol State Nature Reserve, which also includes Lake Karakol, inhabited by flamingos and serving as a haven for many other birds.
The second point of the route will be a piece of Sahara in Western Kazakhstan in the form of Tuesu sands. The sand massif stretches from the southeast to the northeast for 30 km. Seneca Sands, or Tuesu, as they are designated on some maps, is a full-fledged desert. A truly unique place in the vicinity of the city of Aktau, where the golden dunes seem absolutely endless. Some of them reach a height of 20 m and more.
Take a break for lunch.
After lunch and a break, the second part of the day is devoted to exploring the panoramic points of the Bozjyra tract “Aurora” and “Amphitheater”. From the heights, breathtaking views of the snow-white chalk cliffs, reminiscent of the teeth of a fantastic ridge, open up. Millions of years ago, the waves of the ancient Tethys Ocean splashed on the site of today’s Bozjyra tract. Over time, the water retreated, leaving behind chalk and limestone deposits that today form the impressive canyons and cliffs of this place, two of which are called Fangs.
Then you descend to the lower panorama. Here you can fully experience the scale of the natural amphitheater, surrounded by majestic cliffs.
After that, you return to the camp for dinner and overnight.
Day 2: Bozjyra (middle panorama) – Gorge with bird nests – Mount Bokty – Kyzylkup (Tiramisu)
Bozjyra (middle panorama) – Gorge with bird nests – Mount Bokty – Kyzylkup (Tiramisu)
After waking up and having breakfast, we go down to the first point – the middle panorama of the Bozjyra tract, from where the most balanced view of the “fangs” and the entire tract as a whole opens up.
The second short stop will be a gorge with bird nests, which is a junction of two salt marsh rocks in which steppe birds settle.
The next stop will be Mount Bokty. On one side, the mountain looks like a giant boat with an inverted keel. From the southern side, the mountain looks like a horizontal multi-colored pyramid. Translated from Kazakh, Bokty means “pie”. The mountain is an outlier formed at the bottom of an ancient sea. The base of the mountain is cut by meridional gorges similar to the paws and figures of fantastic animals.
After exploring the mountain, there is an organized break and lunch.
After this, the route goes to the Kyzylkup tract (Tiramisu hills). Once upon a time, in this red and white corner of Mangystau, there was a lake called Kyzylkup, which means “a lot of red” in Kazakh, but it dried up and now these places resemble Martian landscapes. The Kyzylkup tract is smooth low hills made up of rocks of different colors that alternate with each other, creating a fascinating sight. The color of the layers is given by impurities of various minerals. The white layers consist of chalk, and the red ones contain iron. Because of its unusual layered structure, the tract is often called “Tiramisu” by the people. Like all the attractions on the route, the tract owes its origin to the ancient Tethys Ocean. As proof of this, in the vicinity of the Kyzylkup tract, as in many other places in Mangystau, you can find fossilized teeth of ancient sharks, hipparions (ancient three-toed horses) and machairods (saber-toothed cats). Then, together with the guide, you return to the hotel in the city of Aktau.
