TALDYKORGAN

Located in the foothills of the Dzungarian Alatau, on the banks of the Karatal River, Taldykorgan is the regional capital of the Almaty Region and the center of Semirechye. The city enjoys a favorable geographical location: surrounded by mountains on one side and steppe on the other, making it picturesque and livable. Founded in the 19th century as the settlement of Gavrilovka, Taldykorgan was granted city status in 1944 and renamed Taldy-Kurgan. Taldykorgan is the industrial and cultural center of the region. Food and light industries, as well as mechanical engineering, are well-developed here. The city is a transportation hub, with roads connecting Almaty with the northern and eastern regions of the country.

The M. Tynyshbaev Museum of Local History is the only museum in the region that preserves data on the history of the entire region, attracting over 50,000 visitors annually. The diverse exhibits are impressive, and also showcase local flora and fauna.

The Ilyas Zhansugurov House Museum is a place where you can experience the greatness of the Kazakh poet, experience his work, and pay tribute to his memory. The palace also houses a philharmonic society, a choir, and an ensemble, and hosts various city events.

The Zhetysu Monument, or city stele, is another recognizable landmark in Taldykorgan. It is located at the roundabout and symbolizes the seven rivers of Zhetysu.

The Zhetysu Valley is where the Kazakhs as a people acquired their name, and where the Kazakh Khanate was formed. Seven major rivers and countless large and small bodies of water weave their way through dense forests, tugai groves, and variegated mountains.

The Karatal River Valley’s breathtaking views and the majesty of its waters attract tourists from all over the world. The river flows across a plain amid golden sands, creating the illusion of a seascape.
